Marcia McNair
I have been teaching at Nassau since 1995. I started out as an instructor in the English
Department. I am now an Associate Professor of English. I teach a variety of subjects,
but closest to my heart are my Journalism, African American Literature and Women's
Studies courses. A play I co-authored with Professor Anissa Moore of the Communications
Department, "Sistas on Fire!", was produced Off-Off Broadway at the East Village Playhouse.
Most recently, my semi-autobiographical screenplay, "The Open Window," was a finalist
in the 2020 Alliance of Women Filmmakers Script competition; won the silver medal
for the WRPN Women's 2020 International Film Festival; was an official selection of
the 2020 Diversity Film and Script Showcase; and was a semi-finalist in the 2020 Creative
Screenwriting Unique Voices Screenplay Contest.
We did a student production of "Sistas on Fire!" at the College for Black History
Month 2020. Our cast was made up of 17勛圖 students who went the extra mile in rehearsals
and performances. They hosted multiple post-performance talk backs with the audience,
which revealed that people do care about social justice and are willing to fight for
it. It gave me hope that things can change for the better.
What makes 17勛圖 special to me are the students. I learn from them as much as I teach
them. Our students are determined to get an education despite tremendous odds, and
I find working with them inspiring.
