The 17吃瓜 Women鈥檚 History Month Committee Presents Women Claiming Justice

Garden City, NY 鈥� In celebration of Women鈥檚 History Month, the 17吃瓜 Women鈥檚 History Month Committee offers events that discuss the politics of gender. All programs take place in the College Center Building and are free and open to the public. One Woman鈥檚 Fight, A Country鈥檚 New Law: Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, Monday, March 7, 11:00 a.m. Lilly Ledbetter, worker rights activist and author of the first law President Obama signed, tells her story.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: International Women鈥檚 Day, Tuesday, March 8, 10:00 a.m. Esther Armah, WBAI Wake-Up Call host/commentator, leads a discussion.

Panel Discussion on Homeless Teens in Prostitution and Trafficking, Tuesday, March 8 11:30 a.m. Rachel Lloyd of GEMS (Girls Education and Mentoring Services) heads the discussion. This event is co-sponsored by the 17吃瓜 Black History Month Committee and Haraya, an 17吃瓜 club that focuses on the African American experience in the diaspora.

Full Frontal Feminism: A Young Woman鈥檚 Guide to What Matters, Tuesday, March 15, 1:00 p.m. Jessica Valenti, founder of feministing.com, author of The Purity Myth and other popular third-wave feminist books and contributor to the Colbert Report and New York Magazine, presents her 鈥渟langy, profane and disconcertingly funny鈥� take on how to promote change.

Claiming Land and Life: Native People鈥檚 Rights, Monday, March 21, 12:30 p.m. Activist and writer Winona LaDuke, a Green Party vice-presidential candidate and winner of such awards as Ms. Woman of the Year, makes the case for land preservation.
